Green remodeling isn’t a specialty add-on at Murray Lampert — it’s built into how we work. Our in-house architectural designers and interior designers integrate sustainable design from the very first concept, so energy efficiency and material choices are part of the plan — not an afterthought. We specify energy-efficient products and practices on every project: high-performance windows and doors, low-VOC materials, water-conserving fixtures, and construction waste management that meets or exceeds CALGreen requirements. And as a fully licensed General Contractor (CA License #458038), every permitted project is designed and built in full compliance with California’s Title 24 Energy Efficiency Standards and CALGreen Building Code. The result: better indoor air quality, lower utility bills, and a home that holds its value in San Diego’s competitive real estate market.

San Diego homeowners have a real advantage when it comes to green building. Our mild climate, year-round sun, and progressive building codes make energy-efficient upgrades especially high-return here. Murray Lampert’s green remodeling approach covers five key areas.

Energy Efficiency. We design to exceed California Title 24 minimums on insulation, air sealing, and mechanical systems. High-performance windows and exterior doors reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter — a meaningful upgrade in San Diego’s marine and inland climate zones. Where applicable, we coordinate HVAC upgrades and design ENERGY STAR-compatible systems.

Sustainable & Low-VOC Materials. Indoor air quality matters. We specify low-VOC paints, adhesives, and sealants in compliance with SCAQMD Rule 1113 and CARB standards. Where possible, we source recycled-content materials, FSC-certified lumber, and locally manufactured products to reduce embodied carbon.

Water Conservation. California’s water demands make this a priority. We install WaterSense-certified low-flow fixtures, dual-flush toilets, and efficient irrigation systems that comply with local water district requirements. For larger projects, we plan rough-in for greywater recycling systems where the City of San Diego permitting allows.

Solar-Ready Construction. New construction and major remodels in California must comply with the solar mandate under Title 24 Part 6. We design roof structures, attic space, and electrical panels with solar in mind from the start, whether you’re installing panels now or planning to in the future.

Waste Reduction. CALGreen requires construction waste management plans for most permitted projects. We divert a minimum of 65% of jobsite waste from landfill through recycling and material recovery — and typically exceed that threshold.

Most remodeling contractors will meet code minimums and call it green. Murray Lampert goes further. Our in-house architectural designers integrate energy and sustainability decisions into the design from day one — not as an afterthought. That integration matters because the most effective green upgrades are the ones designed into the structure: optimized window placement for passive solar, roof overhangs sized for San Diego’s sun angle, and mechanical chases planned for future heat pump upgrades.

We’re also transparent about trade-offs. Some green upgrades have strong ROI in San Diego — high-performance windows, additional attic insulation, and solar-ready electrical panels pay back quickly. Others, like full LEED certification, add cost without proportional benefit for residential remodels. We’ll tell you which is which, give you options, and let you decide.
