European vs Traditional Face Frame Cabinets For Your Kitchen

There is some truth to the statement of ” Euro vs “Face Frame” construction. One of the draw backs to a euro style cabinet is modularization. For example a 72″ wall would need 3-24″ or 2 36″ Euro modular cabinets to fit the space. A traditional face frame construction would have one cabinet 72″ long for the same space. My experience has been that a traditional faceframe constructed cabinets with a datto and rabit construction will out perform a Euro-style cabinet. The space inside the cabinet is the same either way. Infact it has been shown that a custom cabinet will utilize the space more efficiently because the possiblities are endless. With Euro-style modular you are generally limited buy certain increments ie: 16″, 24″, 30″, 36″ ect.

Alot of folks like the look of Euro-style cabinerty ie: little or no faceframe showing around the doors. This look can be accomplished with the faceframe construction by simply increasing the dooor overlay amount. This way you get the Euro look with a custom cabinet

The bottom line is you the customer need to have a proactive part in the design and lay-out of your cabinets. Communicate to your cabinet provider exactly what you need want and desire. Most anything can be done. You will soon find out if you have professional or not helping you. If you can find pictures of the style and design you like that will really help.

Hello Gregg,

You are correct that the opening size may be up to an 1 1/2″ smaller on a faceframe construction. However the usable space inside the cabinet is the same. My experience has been that most European cabinets come in a 3″ increment sizes. If you are a custom Euro-shop this would not apply to you. Great discussion. Thanks for your response.
